Food banks cut services as demand rises across Canada + Calgary astronaut to support Artemis II crew on moon mission

Food banks cut services as demand rises across Canada

Food banks across Canada are reducing services as demand continues to grow while donations struggle to keep up.

In Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, the local food bank will begin limiting clients to one visit per month and lowering the amount of food distributed starting April 1.

Staff say rising living costs have led to a sharp increase in the number of households needing support. Across the country, many food banks are seeing fewer donations while usage continues to climb, leaving some unable to meet the full demand.

Calgary astronaut to support Artemis II crew on moon mission

A Calgary born astronaut will play a supporting role in NASA’s upcoming Artemis II mission, which is expected to send astronauts on a journey around the moon for the first time in decades.

Jenni Gibbons has been selected as the backup to Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen and will remain on the ground unless needed. The mission is scheduled for early April after an earlier launch attempt was postponed due to technical concerns.

Gibbons has completed the same preparation as the flight crew and will assist with final checks and communication during the mission, highlighting Canada’s involvement in the international effort.

Several nearby homes were evacuated after a two alarm fire broke out at a residence in Etobicoke late Saturday night.

Firefighters were called to a home near Dundas Street West and Royal York Road shortly after 10 p.m. Crews initially entered the house but later moved to an exterior response after the fire spread to the upper level.

Paramedics assessed two people at the scene, and no injuries were reported. Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
