Taste Test Thursday
Lucky Donkatsu is the latest to join Toronto’s food scene, serving up comforting Korean donkatsu with retro diner vibes. Think crispy cutlets, hearty sauces, and sides straight out of your favorite K-dramas.
The Spot:
📍 5374 Yonge St (North York)
📍 415 Yonge St (Downtown)
Retro '80s and '90s diner decor with K-drama vibes. Bright lights, clean interiors, and the option to play it cool while waiting for your meal.
The Menu:
Mains:
Classic Donkatsu (Pork Cutlet) - $18.95
Chicken Katsu - $18.95
Hambak Steak (Only 10 per day!) - $22.95
Add-ons:
Sweet Potato Mousse (+$3)
Mozza Topping (+$4)
Cream Soup + Bread (+$3)
Sides:
Old K Spaghetti - $11.95
Truffle Fries - $9.95
Burrata Salad - $15.00
Drinks:
Lucky Draft Lager (Pint $8.95 / Pitcher $25.95)
Highball (Yuzu or Classic) - $14.00
Sapporo - $6.95
Milkis - $4.00
The Damage: Let’s talk pricing. The katsu mains range from $18.95 to $22.95 (add-ons will set you back a bit more). Sides like Truffle Fries and Old K Spaghetti add some variety, but portions are on the smaller side. Drinks start at $6.95, climbing to $25.95 for a pitcher of their in-house lager.
What’s the Vibe? It’s all about the diner feel – perfect for a casual date or an after-work catch-up. Loud enough to buzz, but not so much that you can't hear your friends.
The Reality Check: Reviews are mixed. The donkatsu is generously portioned, crispy, and flavourful, but sauces like the curry can be hit-or-miss (mild for some, sweet for others). Sides are tasty but not huge, so manage those expectations. The Hambak Steak is the showstopper, but with only 10 a day, you might want a backup plan.
Worth It? If you’re after Instagrammable diner vibes, go for it. Hardcore katsu fans might prefer spots like Got Bap (Sheppard) for bigger bang-for-buck. Otherwise, hit up Lucky Donkatsu for a nostalgic night out.
