First Population Decline in Canada Since Confederation + Buy Canadian Crackdown

Crack down on misleading “Buy Canadian” claims

Canada’s top food regulator is cracking down on misleading “Buy Canadian” claims, issuing fines and launching investigations into some of the country’s largest grocery chains.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed it has penalized multiple businesses for falsely promoting imported food as Canadian, including two stores operated by Loblaw Companies Limited. A Real Canadian Superstore location in Ontario and a Fortinos store in Etobicoke were each fined $10,000 for violations that occurred in October 2025.

Ontario drug offender will serve the rest of his sentence at home after jail time was excessively harsh

An Ontario drug offender will serve the rest of his sentence at home after a court ruled his jail time was excessively harsh.

The Court of Appeal for Ontario found conditions at Maplehurst Correctional Complex including overcrowding, repeated lockdowns, and violence went beyond what was necessary.

Chief Justice Michael Tulloch said the sentence had already met its purpose, allowing the remainder to be served under house arrest.

Canada’s population declined in 2025 for the first time since 1867

Canada’s population declined in 2025 for the first time since 1867, driven largely by a sharp drop in non-permanent residents.

New estimates from Statistics Canada show the population fell by about 102,000 people, as the number of temporary workers and international students dropped significantly.

While permanent immigration continued, it slowed compared to previous years, and Canada also saw negative natural growth, with more deaths than births in late 2025.

Officials say the figures may fluctuate in the coming months, but the decline reflects a broader shift as the federal government moves to reduce temporary immigration after years of rapid growth.
