Two Canadian based pilots killed in LaGuardia Airport crash in New York
A fatal runway incident at New York’s LaGuardia Airport has left two Canadian-based pilots dead after a Jazz Aviation aircraft operating on behalf of Air Canada collided with an airport emergency vehicle late Sunday night. The aircraft struck a fire truck that had entered the runway while responding to a separate issue involving another flight. The captain and first officer were pronounced dead. More than 40 individuals, including passengers and emergency responders, were transported to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening.
The impact caused significant damage to the front of the aircraft and left the emergency vehicle overturned. Air traffic control audio suggests there was an attempt to stop the vehicle moments before the collision. The airport was temporarily closed as U.S. investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
DoorDash offers extra pay to couriers as gas prices continue to rise
DoorDash Canada says it is rolling out a short-term program to help couriers offset increasing fuel costs. Drivers using their own vehicles can earn additional weekly payments based on the distance they travel, with the initiative running for just over a month.
The company says it will cover the cost of the program and does not plan to pass the expense on to customers or merchants.
Ontario plans takeover of Toronto land to expand Billy Bishop Airport
The Ontario government says it will bring forward legislation aimed at taking control of land owned by the City of Toronto at Billy Bishop Airport. The change would remove the city from the current agreement that oversees the airport and allow the province to move ahead with expansion plans.
Those plans include extending the runway, upgrading the terminal, and accommodating larger aircraft. The province has also signalled it may designate the airport as a special economic zone to accelerate approvals. The proposal has faced opposition from city officials and local groups who have long raised concerns about expanding the airport.
