World Cup accommodation demand lower than expected in Toronto and Vancouver

Despite anticipation surrounding the FIFA World Cup, hotel occupancy levels in Toronto and Vancouver have not yet reached the levels many expected ahead of the tournament.

Recent industry data shows a significant number of hotel rooms remain available in both Canadian host cities, even as the event draws closer. While accommodation providers have seen some increase in bookings, demand has been more gradual than many businesses originally predicted.

Tourism and hospitality officials say there is still time for reservations to rise, as many visitors often make travel arrangements closer to major events. Industry leaders remain hopeful that bookings will continue to increase as the opening matches approach.

Retired Air Canada pilot charged following licensing investigation

A former Air Canada captain is facing multiple criminal charges after a police investigation into allegations involving pilot licensing requirements.

Peel Regional Police allege that Geoffrey Wall, 59, of Barrie, worked as a commercial airline captain for several years without possessing a licence required for that position. Investigators claim the issue affected hundreds of flights over more than a decade. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Wall retired from Air Canada in 2025 after a lengthy aviation career that included military service and leadership roles within the airline industry. Air Canada has stated that he met ongoing training and flight proficiency requirements during his employment, while acknowledging that the licence at the centre of the investigation was not held by Wall.
